The way of great learning lies in illuminating luminous virtue, renewing the people, and resting in the highest good.
The way of great learning lies in illuminating luminous virtue, renewing the people, and resting in the highest good.
Once you know where to stop, you can be settled; once settled, you can be calm; once calm, you can be at ease; once at ease, you can deliberate; once you deliberate, you can attain.
Things have roots and branches; affairs have beginnings and endings. Knowing what comes first and what comes after, you come near the Way.
Those of old who wished to make luminous virtue shine throughout the world first ordered their states; those who wished to order their states first regulated their families; those who wished to regulate their families first cultivated themselves; those who wished to cultivate themselves first rectified their hearts; those who wished to rectify their hearts first made their intentions sincere; those who wished to make their intentions sincere first extended their knowledge; extending knowledge lies in investigating things.
Only after things are investigated is knowledge brought to completion; only after knowledge is brought to completion are intentions made sincere; only after intentions are made sincere is the heart rectified; only after the heart is rectified is the person cultivated; only after the person is cultivated is the family regulated; only after the family is regulated is the state ordered; only after the state is ordered is the world at peace.
From the Son of Heaven down to the common people, all without exception take self-cultivation as the root.
There has never been a case where the root is in disorder and the branches are well governed, or where what should be weighty is treated lightly and what should be light is treated weightily.
