This is not a primary text but a reference layer over the rest of the library. Chengyu (成语) are the four-character idioms that condense a classical episode or quotation into a fixed phrase — see-once-think-twice, three-men-make-a-tiger, the fox-exploits-the-tiger's-might. Modern Mandarin uses several thousand; this catalog carries one thousand, curated for pedagogy and reordered so the most useful come first. Each entry has pinyin and a CC-CEDICT-sourced gloss; where an idiom is coined verbatim in a classical book we ship (Lunyu, Mengzi, Daodejing, etc.), the entry carries an `origin` link to the exact line, so reading 见贤思齐 jumps to Lunyu 4:22. Coverage is partial — about fifty of the thousand currently link to a verbatim origin — and grows as more classical texts ship; unmatched idioms simply carry no origin link. Originally derived from the MIT-licensed pwxcoo/chinese-xinhua list and rebuilt for pinyin + CC-CEDICT-only glosses; see tools/build_chengyu.py.
